The former vice president under retiring President Oscar Arias’, Chinchilla takes over from a leader leaving office with an 80 percent approval rating. The swearing in of Laura Chinchilla, the first female president of Costa Rica, is a dream come true for outgoing president, Oscar Arias. For Arias, the Chinchilla presidency, also means a continuation of his projects of “opening” Costa Rica to world markets and competition. “The road is paved and Laura will continue on”, said Arias this week. In many of the public events on Friday, Arias said that he is proud to hand over the country to a woman.
