Costa Rica’s First Woman President, Laura Chinchilla

Laura Chinchilla, 51, has been sworn in 30 minutes ago as the President of Costa Rica, joining a growing list of female presidents in Latin America. The former vice president under retiring President Oscar Arias’, Chinchilla takes over from a leader leaving office with an 80 percent approval rating. The swearing in of Laura Chinchilla, the first female president of Costa Rica, is a dream come true for outgoing president, Oscar Arias. For Arias, the Chinchilla presidency, also means a continuation of his projects of “opening” Costa Rica to world markets and competition. “The road is paved and Laura will continue on”, said Arias this week. In many of the public events on Friday, Arias said that he is proud to hand over the country to a woman. At noon today, in a festive outdoor scene at San José’s La Sabana Park, the crowds cheered on Chinchilla, as outgoing President Oscar Arias handed over the keys to Casa Presidencial to Laura Chinchilla, but last night he gave her a bouquet of roses.
